A personal project, coming up with character designs for a reskin of the traditional card game Durak - 'Durakolypse!'
There are four factions, set in a post-apocalyptic world.
- Museum Raiders: ex-reenactors, history nerds, and people who've... raided museums! I allowed myself one genuine historical item per character, and then had to try and construct a historical silhouette using modern items and clothing.
- Pyro Jocks: They are what it says on the tin - dynamic, sporty and obsessed with fire! I tried to explore different types of sports gear to widen the category of 'jock'
- The Oligarchy: This is the only faction with access to modern weaponry. They're essentially a private army, full of corruption and power plays. They are relatively clean and wear their uniforms with pride.
- Rainbow Doms: These were the inspiration for the entire setting! Based on a tumblr post - who could resist designing characters for a faction that includes 'lesbian chainsaw dominatrixes'?!
I originally tried out some with lineart but it felt like the details of it detracted from the 'impression' - I wanted bright bold colours and a dynamic feel to it. The lack of pupils makes them a bit threatening, which works as the game is all about combat. And I like that they feel more like avatars for the character, rather than the character themself? It's less distracting and more mood-based, like a quick-read.
